Porsche Cayenne for an 18-year old boy's first car?

Hello all, I just wanted to ask for some opinions and thoughts on the following subject. My father would like to give me his used 2008 Porsche Cayenne for use as my first car, as he would like to buy a new car. The car is only worth about $16,000 because it has a lot of milage.

First I would like to say this is a SUV / truck, not a sports car! It is actually one of the most inexpensive luxury SUV's one can buy. Alongside Audi, Mercedes, Land Rover, and BMW, the Cayenne has the lowest starting price.
I am so extremely responsible and am not a boastful person at all. I drive it sometimes now, and would offer my parents some of my savings for the vehicle as a thank you.

The options are to take this car or purchase a used car anywhere from 15-25k in price. I do prefer SUVs though. Keeping the car as advantages, such as knowing nothing is wrong with it, familiarity, safety, and driving in the Winter. It also won't cost my parents a single cent, which I value. Used cars can be uncertain, and will cost our family more than to keep the car.

Although I will still be a teenage boy in a Cayenne. I don't want to upset others but I do like this idea. Although we can also get a really nice used car in the 15-25k price range. We know insurance is going to be a lot no matter what I drive.

I'm not sure what the best thing to do is, but I am really grateful. I'm open to your opinions and thank you for your time!

Buying and selling always wastes a lot of money and time, so keeping it in the family makes a lot of sense.

This really is too much of a vehicle for a first car, but given the situation, might as well try it.

Find a good independent shop.

Dealers not only cost too much, but want to sell new cars, so don't care that much.

It will get vandalized and scratched at school parking lots, etc., so be prepared for that.

I hope you save a lot of money for repairs. Since that that vehicle is just a spruced up VW Toureg, you will need it.

Otherwise, your post is way too long and I did not read it.

Cost of car insurance depends on many factors.

You can check average cost of car insurance in your city at:

Have you looked at what insurance will cost for an 18 year old BOY driving this kind of car? The insurance companies do not see it as an SUV, they see it as a Porsche and charge accordingly.

How about the cost of a simple oil change? Or parts? The fewer of any particular car made, the more the parts cost.

You need to stick with a nice Ford Focus or other cheap car, save the sports cars and Porsches until you are over 25 and the insurance rates come way down.

Just take the vehicle, it's a free car for you and your dad, because it is already paid off, and who cares about the symantecs and what people will think.

It is YOUR decision, will it make you happy to drive it? If so, get it.

Heck no. It might still be a good car but any little thing that goes wrong is a bunch of money out of your pocket. Any German car is especially expensive to repair and Porsche parts are extra expensive. Get something a little cheaper. Also since you are a teenager (as I am too) we tend to not have as much experience on the road as older drivers. Most likely something is going to happen to it, whether it be a small ding to a complete crash and it would feel horrible damaging a Porsche.

I suggest one to try this site where you can compare rates from different companies: http://INSURANCECOMPAREQUOTES.US/index.html?src=2YAoso7sa8igE

Update: Sorry, I just wanted to make it clear that I am between the fence and unsure. I don't lean to either side more than the other.

A 2008 Cayenne with a lot of miles? The only who is going to be upset is you when you have to pay the maintenance bill. Porsche / VW isn“t known for being reliable, but they are known (especially, Porsche) to be astronomically expensive to maintain.

I checked N.A.D.A. for a 2008 Cayenne, base model with auto transmission, and 100,000 miles on the odometer. If this car has fewer miles, add some value; unless it has a LOT more, do not subtract a thing. I chose Very Good condition, not Excellent nor simply Good. I still get a Private Party value of $20,000. Depending on what state you live in, that may influence your insurance, which will be high more because of the SUV designation than the fact it's a Porsche.

If your father has taken good care of the vehicle, it will perform like a Porsche. Porsches are consistently rated among the most reliable vehicles made, regarless of what some other Answerers believe. The 300 HP V6 will provide very good power, but it won't be extremely fast. This is a a 4,900 pound vehicles (which may explain why your father wants you driving it). I've ridden in one; it doesn't feel that heavy at all. It is nimble on its feet.

If you can stand the insurance cost, you'll be ok with the maintenance (again, assuming the car is in good shape and has been properly maintained). A Dealership will charge you around $300.00 for an oil change, but you'll only do those oil changes every 12,000 miles or once a year. You can probably save around 30 percent by having the car serviced at a quality independent shop.

The car has room for your friends and gear. Do believe what the other Answerer said about it getting beat up in school parking lots. You don't see many nice cars in those lots, and that's one of the reasons.

Daniel,

I am also an eighteen year old guy (Connecticut). I've owned a new body style Mustang GT, Hummer H2, and a MINI Cooper S in the past year and a half. I've gotten so many opinions from others about "too much vehicle", yet I've never cracked up a car. In fact, I'm confident that BECAUSE I drive nice vehicles, I take better care of them.

IMO, you SHOULD be able to drive any car you want, and not have to feel obligated to justify your choice to anyone but yourself. If your parents are fortunate enough to give you a Cayenne, they've done something right. Furthermore, seeing that they've raised a son who genuinely cares about looking snobbish because of his first car, they've also raised an appreciative, respectful person.

To answer your question: Drive the Cayenne. Or, buy the car that you love. It doesn't matter if it's your parents' Cayenne V6, an old Integra, or a Bentley. If you like it, you'll take care of it, and you'll have the responsibility to prove all the naysayers wrong.

To anyone else who is reading this, in a similar position: People are always going to hate, nice car or clunker... Might as well use your money on something you like, and discard negative opinions of others.

Hopefully, you're enjoying your Cayenne. I'm thinking about buying myself a Cayenne Turbo in the summer. Enjoy it!

as long as you are a sensible lad and can handle and control the speed then yes. or if you cant handle or control the car trust me that car will be out of no where porsche is a powerfull car and once you put your foot on it as a beginner and first time driving a car like this you will find it scary and it might be dangerous although what i suggest try buying a used car or borrow a car but not as powerfull as a porsche and practice driving and if you handle the car well then try out your dads porsche and a IMPORTANT THING DONT DRIVE IT ON THE MOTORWAY WHEN YOU FIRST TRY IT FIRST DRIVE YOUR PORSCHE ROUND TOWN OR WHEREVER YOU WANT AND THEN AFTER 6 MONTHS OR 1 YEAR AND YOU HANDLE THE CAR TRY OUT THE MOTORWAY WITH YOUR DAD FOR ABOUT 4 OR 6 TIMES AND IF YOUR GOOD ON MOTORWAY YOU CAN DRIVE IT ON MOTORWAY WITHOUT YOUR DAD AND A ANOTHER THING IS I CAN TELL YOUR A SENSIBLE PERSON BY ASKING THIS QUESTION BECAUSE SOME PEOPLE AT YOUR AGE WOULD BE LIKE OUT OF CONTROL AND WOULD NOT BE SENSIBLE WITH THE CAR THEY WOULD ALL ACT COOL DRIVING IN A PORSCHE AND THEN IN HOSPITAL DIENG OR IN PAIN AND HAVING INJURIES GOOD LUCK

well first offf, that is what i like to hear, our ages just driving what we would appreciate. haha anyways, id say stay with the porsche and keep treating that with the best you can. otherwise id tell you to go get a 2011 camaro and at least you;d still have it under some type of warranty at least, but you like you suv's. id say talk it over with your parents, if you thnk you'd like to have piece of mind and do not want to worry about maintenance then maybe try a dealer, look around for a few things you like. but all in all id say stick to the car you have now and at least when it get valued at 10,000$ then sell it in to get a nice car and maybe good on gas too, but at least you;d have that car for about another 3-4 years and your parents will appreciate the thought of you holding on to their things too. im still trying to get my father panarama turbo, but i doubt it. maybe 15 years from now tho :).. good luck man!
