These firms were entirely separate, although Porsche owned a non-controlling interest in VW. With a change in German law a few years ago it became possible for Porsche to legally buy controlling interest in VW ... and Porsche did try to do that using a scheme based on controlling VW stock futures. That scheme failed, and so David did not manage to buy Goliath (VW is one of the largest vehicle makers on the planet; Porsche is a relatively small boutique car maker). Recently the purchase of controlling interest in Porsche by VW Group was completed and VW does now own Porsche ... along with Bentley, Lamborghini, Audi, and others. The idea that VW has always owned Porsche is wrong.

Porsche owned a non-controlling portion of VW, but the Volkswagen Law ensured the the state of Lower Saxony always retained 20.2% ownership thus ensuring that they could always control votes, which required 80% approval. Porsche purchased a bunch of shares under contract of VW stock while challenging the Volkswagen Law. By the time the law was overturned, Porsche had a majority position under contract. The problem was that the people who sold the shares didn't actually own them. They were now contractually obligated to sell them to Porsche at a prearranged price but they couldn't be bought anywhere near that price. They kept raising the asking price but no one would sell. The result was that Porsche had made finance arrangements based on the assumption that their contracts would be honored at the prearranged price. The price of the stock skyrocketed until VW was briefly the most valuable company on the planet by stock valuation. Porsche's contracts all fell through because no one could afford to fulfill them, their financing agreements still remained though and they were on the hook for them. Meanwhile, the world economy collapsed and the banks were calling in Porsche's debts. VW turned around and bailed out Porsche by buying Porsche.

Actually, VW and Porsche are partners. Porsche is trying to buy VW to protect it from being bought out by other companies. Porsche owns 27% of VW. Fernando Porsche created the 1st VW, the beetle. Then he made his own company and named it after his last name, Porsche. Thats why those companies are partners and thats why they share there technology and parts.

these people are both wrong and stupid. until last year, porsche and VAG (volkswagen audi group) had no relation, outside of family based ties (goofy family tree stuff). Business wise, they had ntohing in common, outside of doing 2 joint projects together, the 914 (used VW engine) and the cayenne (shares platform with the toureg). last year (maybe longer ago now?) porsche bought 29% of VAG to prevent any possibility of a hostile takeover. porsche may increase that stake soon also.

VW owns Porsche AG, but Porsche SE owns a controlling interest (50.7%) in VW. See here:
In other words, as USAFisnumber1 pointed out in his answer, VW owns the Porsche operating business but the Porsche holding company controls VW.

In terms of stock, Porsche has not always owned Volkswagen. But in terms of blood and soul, the Porsche family has always and will probably continue to "own" VW.

Nope. Other way around. VW AG purchased 49.9 % of Porsche in 2009. In August 2012, VW completed the buyout and now owns 100% of Porsche AG.

Porsche Holdings S.E. controls the mighty V.W. Empire. The Porsche/Piech families own Porsche Holdings S.E. Their families are made up of the greatest automotive enginer, Dr. F. PORSCE, plus some of the greatest enginers and lawyers.

VW recently purchased Porsche. VW does NOT own Rolls-Royce, instead BMW owns it. VW owns Bentley. There's considerable misinformation here.

VW as a corporation owns Porsche ( Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG) as a car manufacturing subdivision. Like GM owns Chevy, Buick and GMC trucks.
Porsche as a bigger corporation (Porsche Automobil Holding SE) owns the majority of VW stock.
Same names, different "companies." Kind of confusing.

Last I knew, VW bought Rolls Royce. They probably bought part of Porche also.
